Signs You May Have a Gas Leak

Natural gas and LPG have no smell of their own. A strong smelling additive is put in so a leak can be noticed, which is why that rotten egg smell is the sign most people know. It is not the only one.

  • A hissing or whistling sound near a gas line, meter or appliance.
  • A pilot light that keeps going out.
  • A burner flame that is yellow or orange rather than blue.
  • Soot or dark marks around an appliance.
  • A gas bill that has climbed with no change in how much gas you use.
  • Dead or dying grass in a line across the yard where nothing else explains it.

If you notice any of these, stop using the appliance and have it looked at. A gas appliance that is faulty or poorly ventilated can produce carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. That is worth taking seriously even when nothing smells wrong.

Why Gas Work Needs a Licensed Gas Fitter

In New South Wales, gas fitting work has to be carried out by a licensed person. That is not a formality. Connecting an appliance involves sizing the supply, making the joints correctly, testing the line for leaks and checking the appliance runs the way it is meant to once it is connected.

Buying an appliance and having someone connect it informally is a genuinely bad idea. Beyond the safety risk, unlicensed gas work can affect an appliance warranty and can cause problems at the time of a property sale or an insurance claim.

Hydrauflo Plumbing holds NSW licence 479644C and is insured.
